ETC aims to accelerate the development of innovative therapies by connecting investigators with translational expertise, shared resources, funding opportunities, and collaborative networks across Boston Children's Hospital. 

Vouchers in amounts up to $10,000 are available to faculty on a competitive basis to support translational research projects. These funds should be used to cover core facility charges or shared resource expenses only. Completed applications for the Fall 2026 cycle are due by 5pm on September 22, 2026.

About the Program

The program at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) trains individuals for a career in academic clinical chemistry that includes service, teaching and research. BCH is a 477-bed comprehensive center for pediatric healthcare affiliated with Harvard Medical School.

During their 2-year fellowship at BCH, our fellows gain knowledge of the applications of clinical chemistry for the diagnosis and monitoring of human disease, including knowledge of laboratory techniques, instrumentation, test selection, quality control and management systems. Fellows also gain an understanding of clinical utilization and demand optimization strategies, and the interpretation of laboratory results, clinical liaison, and consultation with clinicians.

Our program encourages active participation in training and education related to laboratory medicine, including teaching analytical and clinical aspects of laboratory medicine to medical technologists, medical students, residents, fellows and other healthcare professionals. In year 2, our fellows will gain and further develop clinical, scientific and research skills.

The program is designed to foster an ability to conduct research autonomously in areas such as analytical method development using state-of-the-art instrumentation such as mass spectrometry, biomarker development or validation, and translational research. In addition to the co-directors, our program has a group of enthusiastic faculty who contribute to fellows training. We also pride ourselves in equipping our fellows with the experience and skills needed to as functional clinical chemists/laboratory directors in an academic medical center setting. We also believe strongly in the value of board certification and have a strong track record in board certification of our fellows.

Program Requirements

To be considered for the program, prospective fellows must have:

Applicants must possess an earned Doctor of Philosophy or an equivalent doctoral degree in biochemistry, physiology, chemistry or another of the natural sciences, or a Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited university or college.

Applicants must have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours (or equivalent) in undergraduate and/or graduate level chemistry or biochemistry courses taken at accredited institutions.

Transcripts from foreign universities are evaluated by an evaluation service to determine equivalency with US based programs.

To Apply

Selection is an ongoing process. Start dates are flexible based on program and trainee desires, although all attempts are made to start training in August/September timeframe. Applications are reviewed by the program directors and then selected for interview. The interview process includes meeting with all program faculty and a presentation of research by the candidate trainee. Strong preference is given to those with prior experience in clinical laboratory medicine.

PDA/OPA Course/Workshop Travel Award

The PDA/OPA Course/Workshop Travel Award supports Boston Children’s Hospital-affiliated postdoctoral research and clinical fellows in advancing their professional development by providing financial assistance for attending academic courses or workshops within the U.S. Recipients will be reimbursed up to $1,000 for eligible travel and attendance expenses for events scheduled to start between October 15th, 2026, and April 14th, 2027 (inclusive). 

Please note, that this award supports attendance at courses and workshops only. It is not intended for conference travel. Please ensure your application is for an eligible course or workshop.

Eligibility:  

• Open to Boston Children’s Hospital-affiliated postdoctoral research and clinical fellows. Instructors and residents are not eligible to apply.
• Previous award recipients are not eligible for future rounds to ensure fair distribution.
• Applicants are allowed only one application per award round.
• This award only covers expenses for courses/classes within the U.S. that start within the specified timeframe (October 15th, 2026 - April 15th, 2027). It may be used for registration, travel, per diems, and lodging only.

The PDA/OPA Travel Award supports Boston Children’s Hospital-affiliated postdoctoral research and clinical fellows in advancing their professional development by providing financial assistance for attending academic conferences, classes, or courses within the U.S. Recipients will be reimbursed up to $1,000 for eligible travel and attendance expenses for events scheduled to start between October 15th, 2026 and April 14th, 2027. 

Please note, that this award supports attendance at conferences only. It is not intended for course/workshop travel. Please ensure your application is for an eligible conference.

Eligibility:  

• Open to Boston Children’s Hospital-affiliated postdoctoral research and clinical fellows. Instructors and residents are not eligible to apply.

• The recipient’s lab, PI, or other fellowship must cover any costs exceeding the award amount. Personal payment 'out-of-pocket' of additional expenses is not allowed. During the application, you will be asked to detail your projected budget. Failure to specify the funding source for expenses beyond this award, or stating that you will cover them yourself 'out-of-pocket', will result in disqualification.
